Elbert is a son of Joseph Grayson and Caroline Rhodes Whiteside, both born in North Carolina, they are believed to be buried in Tennessee. Elbert married Lucinda Long August 21, 1879. In the 1880 Cedar County, Missouri Census he is married to Lucinda, they have no children. Their children were Leonard and Marzenia, both died in infancy. Lucinda died in 1886.

In 1891 Elbert opened the first store in Bona, continuing a general merchandise business there until his death.

In the 1900 Dade County, Missouri Census Elbert, 51, and his wife Martha A, 24, have been married one year and have an infant daughter, born May, 1900 (Artie). Elbert is a merchant.

In 1920 Elbert S, 70, and Martha A, 45, have two children living at home daughter Artie L, 19; and son Loris L, age 16. Elbert's occupation is merchant of general merchandise.
