Dorothy Walland Jennette Marrow

NEWPORT NEWS - Death came gently for Dot Marrow the afternoon of Oct. 31, 2007.

She was born in Edenton, N.C., Dec. 29, 1908, to Nannie Louise Bond and Charles Lee Jennette. Dot and Charles Kennon (Buck) Marrow were married in Tarboro, N.C., in 1933. They moved during World War II to Newport News where Buck, a professional baseball player, found work in the Shipyard. They had one daughter, Louise Bond Marrow Wylie.

During Dot's childhood, long before cottages were built ocean-side in Nags Head, she summered with her family on the sound. Dot loved the ocean and respected the sea greatly - never more than when she rode out the Storm of '33 when the ocean met the sound. She loved sports and being physically active. As camp counselor, she taught tennis and horseback riding. Dot was known to ride a Harley on more than one occasion.

Dot was educated in North Carolina. She was graduated Valedictorian of her Norlina High School class and was an Alpha Delta Phi at Duke University, graduating Cum Laude. Dot loved the sciences, math, and English literature. She was supremely happy curled up with a book by the fire.
True 'blue' through and through, an avid Duke Blue Devils fan, Dot never ever pulled for Carolina unless they were playing against NC State. Loving her home state, she taught the great dog, Nippy, to bark to the beat of, 'I'm a Tarheel Born and a Tarheel Bred.'

Dot was devoted to her family and friends. She loved baseball, basketball, Shad roe and grits, anthems way more than sermons, roses, and people who were kind. She was fiercely independent. Dot was passionate about falling snow, dancing, her grandchildren's performances, baking pecan pies for her dearest friends, ice cream any time of the day, and playing golf and bridge. She played duplicate bridge well into her eighties. In the last decade of her life, she remained as physically active as her nearly complete blindness allowed. Always upbeat, Dot had a welcoming smile, a thankful heart and a home large enough to shelter all those she loved. She and Buck were integral parts of the lives of their two granddaughters, Natalie Louise Burwell and Kennon Manning Hanna, whom they absolutely adored.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Buck; brothers, Robert Jennette, of Litchfield Beach, N.C., and Charles Jennette, of Cary, N.C.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise Bond Wylie and her husband, Gil, of Yorktown; by her sister, Louise Miller, of Fort Belvoir, Va.; and granddaughters, Natalie Burwell, of London, England, and Kennon Hanna and her husband, Kevin, of Towson, Md.

Dot was a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in Hilton for many decades. In 98 years, her faith never faltered. Dot leaves a legacy of generosity and genuine caring for others. She led a life well-lived. Her family will be telling 'Baba' stories for many years to come.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr. when the family gathers at Christmastime.
If anyone wishes to do so, the family suggests that contributions be made to Heartland Hospice and for Age Related Macular Degeneration research.
Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
