John became a Uniformed Firefighter Badge # 710, Nov 01, 1913 at the age of 24 and rose in rank to 1st Grade Fireman by 1916. He was Promoted to Assistant Foreman Nov 01, 1933. He transfered to Engine #1 in 1936.
The Fire Department states in their remarks the following:
"Died 10:59 am Dec 27 , 1939 in the discharge of duty from injuries recieved while operating a fire in the premises 148 E 24th St Manhattan Station 630, at 1:13 am Dec 24th 1939."
John was a soldier in the U S Army Cavalry Troop "B" 2nd Cavalry stationed at Camp Wallace, Union Province, Philippines. He wrote post cards home to his sisters in 1909. By the 1917-18 Draft for WWI, John was already a 1st Grade Fireman in NYC and stated he had served 3 years in the U.S. Cavalry. He became a NYC Fireman in 1913.
Jack was the son of Michael and Jane Ledwith Murphy he was predeceased by his parents, brother George Edward Murphy in 1926 wife, Anna Brooks Murphy in 1928 and his son George J Murphy in 1938. He was survived by his remaining six children, Marie, John Jr., Edward, Charlotte, Anna Nancy, and Jane, 2 granddaughter, Joan and Patricia Murphy and his second wife Teresa.
