"Beloved Mother"
Lillias Evelyn Hayward Wakley passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, following surgery for colon cancer. She was 95. Evelyn was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Logan, Utah, the daughter of Dr. Joseph William "JW" Hayward and Lillias Budge Hayward. She was the fourth of five children. Evelyn grew up in Logan and graduated from Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University, in 1936. She married Ralph Charles Wakley on Aug. 26, 1936, and had two children, Susan Jane (Merlin) Olsen and Ralph Charles Wakley, Jr. Following her husband's death in March 1948, Evelyn worked for the Utah Education Association for 18 years as associate editor of the association's bi-monthly magazine, The UEA Review. She left the UEA to join with one of her best friends, Augusta J. Bullen, to start the furniture company Wicker and Willow in Sugarhouse. After 10 successful years in the furniture business, Evelyn retired at age 65 to travel the world. During her life her most treasured moments came "during the happy summers with my family at the cabin," the recreation home her father built on the shores of Bear Lake in Fish Haven, Idaho.
She is survived by her two children; her sister Mildred Ann Hayward Griffin, in Vacaville, Calif.; four grandchildren and "the five cutest great-grandchildren," as she called them. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers: William Budge Hayward, Dr. Willis Howard Hayward and Dr. Joseph Clare Hayward.
According to Evelyn's wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes buried next to her husband in Logan. The family will hold a private memorial service.
