Judge George Bass Dies At Chicago
FORMER LOCAL MAN PROMINENT IN THAT CITY
Body To Be Brought To This City For Burial-Funeral Held Monday
Messages received in the city today brought news of the death at Chicago of
Judge George Bass, former Manitowoc resident and prominent in Chicago where
he was for many years on the bench and served as Master in Chancery in courts
there. The body is to be brought to this city for burial and funeral services
will be held from St. James Episcopal church, probably Monday afternoon.
Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery.
Spent Summers Here
Up until very recent years Judge Bass had spent his summers in Manitowoc, the
family having formerly owned the palatial home on Michigan avenue, later
purchased by A.J. Vits. Judge Bass had a summer home in Door county also and
was owner of a well equipped farm property to which he gave consideration
attention.
Married Elizabeth Merrill
Judge Bass was the husband of Elizabeth Merrill-Bass of this city, who has been
prominent in national and state political circles for years, Mrs. Bass having
been in charge of the women’s bureau of the Western U.S. in the campaigns of the
late President Wilson. She served as a member of the national democratic
organization and had been prominent in the fight for woman suffrage before
congress.
Brother of Ex-Governor
Born in Vermont 85 years ago, Judge Bass came West many years ago and at once
attained a prominent place in his profession and was elected to the bench in
Chicago, continuing to hold offices almost to the time of his death. Despite his
85 years, Judge Bass retained his keen mind and an interest in public affairs and
was the confidant and advisor of many of the leaders of the nation in the political
field. He was the brother of former Judge Bass of Vermont.
Judge Bass will be remembered by a large circle of friends in this city and by
professional circles in particular.
The body of Judge Bass is expected to arrive here tomorrow, accompanied by Mrs.
Bass and the funeral will be held from the Episcopal church of which deceased was
a member.
