Calvin Baird Is Killed In Crash
Second Lieutenant Calvin C. Baird, 20, (photo) son of Mr. and Mrs. Laban Baird,
1020 Buffalo street, was killed in an airplane accident near Santa Ana, California
Thursday, according to word received by his parents Thursday evening.
The information came from the commanding officer at the Orange County airport where
Lieut. Baird had just recently reported for duty. Deatils of the accident were not
included in the telegram.
Arrangements are being made to bring the body here from California. The remains are
to be brought to the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home.
The death of Lieut. Baird brings to 35 the number of county men who have died while
in service, either in action at the various fronts or in accidents in this country.
Until the telegram arrived last night the local flier's parents did not know that he
was stationed at Santa Ana, but this morning a letter was received from their late
son telling of his transfer to that field from Santa Rosa. The letter related that
he was now flying twin-engine planes where as heretofore he had been flying single
engine planes. Lieut. Baird was a pilot.
According to the telegram received last night the accident occurred about five miles
north of Santa Ana and Liut. Baird died at 9:05 a.m. yesterday.
Lieut. Baird entered service in Nov. 1942, and received his commission as a second
lieutenant at Luke Field, Arizona, in October after which he was home on leave.
Returning to duty he went first to Hamilton Field, California, then to Santa Rosa
and then to Santa Ana.
Three brothers of the dead flier are in service. (Survivors omitted for privacy.)
Calvin Baird was born at Oneida and came here with his parents when he was three years
old. He was a graduate of Lincoln high school with the class of 1942.
Survivors are the parents, the three brothers in service, and two sisters, (Survivors
omitted for privacy.)
