From the Files of the Pilot - Twenty-FIve Years Ago - (1896)
John Bacon of this city died on Tuesday morning of blood poisoning, caused by
an accident to his knee received the preceding Thursday. He was born at Benton,
Lake County, Illinois in 1839 and was 57 years old at the time of his death.
He came to Manitowoc forty years ago and has since lived here. He was the only
expressman and mail carrier the city ever had and was one of the most faithful
to a trust that ever assumed an obligation. It mattered not what the weather
nor how heavy the labor, John never failed in his duty. He was punctuality
itself. He had a wide circle of acquaintances and was known everywhere as a
generous, kind-hearted man.
