Samuel Hitchcock, son of Samuel and Lucy Caroline (née Allen) Hitchcock entered West Point Military Academy on July 1, 1822. He was Brevetted a 2nd Lieutenant on July 1, 1827, and served for six years, until he was requested to resign by his mother. He studied law, suffered from consumption, and was on his way home from having studied in Europe for some time when he died aboard ship. He was buried at sea on the Atlantic Ocean.
