Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Harold Emerson Green, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 16, 2012 in Orem, Utah. His loving wife, Donna, was by his side.
He was born in Driggs, Idaho, on January 21, 1928, to Charles Edgar and Harriet Stevens Green. Emerson spent his youth in Driggs where he excelled in a number of sports. He lettered in track his sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school. During his junior and senior year, he went undefeated in the high jump and pole vault, tying the state pole vault record at 12 feet. Emerson lettered in football, track, and basketball in his junior and senior years of high school. When not participating in athletics, Emerson could be found singing in the school chorus and Glee Club, playing the drums in the PEP Club, or twice being the lead in the school operettas. From the fourth grade on, Emerson worked as many jobs as he could find. After graduating from high school, Emerson joined the Navy.
Upon completing two years of service, he attended Brigham Young University where he met Donna Jean Webb on his first day of school. They were married one year later on September 7, 1949 in the Salt Lake
Temple. After graduation from BYU, Emerson's first teaching job was in St. Anthony, Idaho, where he taught for one year. He was then offered a
position and taught at Bret Harte Junior High School in Hayward, California. After a year-and-a-half in the classroom, he took over the P.E. program and coached a wide variety of sports. He was a positive role model for youth and influenced many lives. Some of the athletes he coached went on to become professional athletes. He remained at Bret Harte until his retirement. During this time, he also enjoyed fast-pitch softball and AA and AAU basketball, where he was always a top scorer and once scored 50 points in a single game. Upon his retirement from teaching, Emerson and Donna moved from Fremont, California, to Orem, Utah. Emerson shared his strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ while serving on a mission for the L.D.S. church with his wife Donna
from 1989-1990, in the San Jose California Mission. Emerson is survived by his dear wife of 62 years, Donna Jean, his five children: Randall Emerson (Gayle), Judy (Douglas) Beck, Linda (Merrill) Dastrup, Cindy (Jim) Hess, and Nancy (Ed) Ryan, 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. A life-long fisherman, Emerson often shared this passion with his grandchildren, though Grandpa Green loved spending time with his grandchildren no matter how it was spent. He has said countless times in action and words that he found his greatest joy in his posterity. Each one loved him dearly.
A viewing will be held at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem, Utah on Friday July 20, 2012 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sunset Heights Chapel, 500 South 600 West in Orem.
