Born in Tunnelton, WV to John and Ethel Tichnell in the Methodist faith. Darrell 'Red' had 2 brothers by the name of Irving and Melvin whom preceeded him in death. Irving at age 2, and Melvin at age 24. Darrell 'Red' was nicknamed for his full head of red hair. 'Red', (my Dad) played basketball for Morgantown University High School. He and my mother (both of whom grew up in Osage, WV) married in 1947. 'Red' & 'Tinkie', as they were both known to family and friends. Darrell worked in the coal mines as did his father John, and brother Melvin. (Melvin returned from WW2, and went to work in the coal mines, and that is where he was killed.) Darrell 'Red' & Mary 'Tinkie', moved to Michigan in 1953 to find work at an automobile factory in Lansing called "Fisher Body". Together they had 3 children; Gary, Arlene, and Gail. These 3 children presently (2004) reside in the Lansing and outlying area of Lansing. Darrell 'Red' and Mary 'Tinkine' have 5 grandchildren. On a personal note; Darrell 'Red' never knew a stranger, and he enjoyed planting big gardens, hobby farming, trout fishing, and deer hunting, and playing a card game called 'Euqure'. He could yodel, and with his deep base voice he would often sing; "You get a line and I'll get a pole". After his wife (my Mom) 'Mary-Tinkie' passed in 1990, where they resided in Florida due to her failing health, Darrell moved back to West Virginia. His heart was always there and he was truly at home when he returned there to finish out his life. Great memories of Dad will forever live on in our hearts. He is truly missed. May God rest his soul and grant him eternal peace. Amen (Submitted by daughter Gail)
