Hazel Campbell as she was known to most people was the daughter of Charles L. Downs and Rosa Lynch Downs. In 1907 the family moved to Garden City Kansas and Hazel graduated from GCHS in 1910. She then taught rural school for a year and then attended Emporia Normal School(now Kansas State College of Emporia) for 2 years and then returned to Garden City to teach which she did until March 1st, 1917 when she married Wayne Melvin Campbell. She then became a homemaker and was very active in the Methodist Church and was a charter member of the W.S.C.S.. She was also a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Royal Neighbors, Finney County Historical Soceity, 20th Century Book Club, and the Homemakers Sunday School Class.
