Elmer D. Jencks E. D. Jencks was born
in DeRuyter Feb. 26, 1834, and was
educated in the schools of the village.
He was the son of Col. E. D. Jencks,
DeRuyters pioneer merchant, who for
nearly have a century was one of her most
prominent and widely known citizens.
In 1854, Mr. Jencks married Elexia Culver.
For five years, he clerked in a drug
store in Syracuse and for a short time he
conducted a general store at Union
Valley; with those exceptions he always
resided in or near DeRuyter, working
his fathers farm on Cuyler Hill and later
his large farm south of the village.
In 1870, he was married to Susan M.
DeLamater, who has been his helpmate ever
since. Mr. Jencks was a life long
Democrat and an ardent party worker;
although not an aspirant for office, he
was twice made collector of school taxes
and had just completed his duties as
corporation collector when stricken with
the illness which resulted in his death
on December 25, 1913. He is survived by
his wife Susan M. Jencks, a son, Fred D.
Jencks of Pittsburgh, a sister Mrs.
Mary E. Fox, and several grandchildren,
two nieces and one nephew.
