Captain Edward Aschenbrenner, age 86, formerly of 936 N. Eighth St., Manitowoc,
passed away Tuesday morning, Aug. 24, 2004.
He was born in Manitowoc on April 8, 1918 son of the late Henry and Dorothy
(Seibel) Aschenbrenner. Edward, a World War II Navy veteran served as chief
quartermaster from July 3, 1940 to July 8, 1946 and was a survivor of the
sinking of the aircraft carrier the USS Lexington during the battle of the
Coral Sea. He was a life long sailor on the Great Lakes, which included the
position of captain on the S.S. Badger and S.S. Spartan carferries that
serviced Ludington and Manitowoc until he retired in 1975. Ed married Arline L.
Meisner on April 23, 1946. Arline preceded him in death Jan. 14, 1988. They
celebrated 41 years together. He was a member of First German Evangelical
Lutheran Church and a life member of VFW Otto Oas Post # 659.
Capt. Ed is survived by his children: Mark (Donna) Aschenbrenner, Manitowoc;
Karen (Rusel) Amatangelo, Manitowoc; and Dorothy Martin, Phoenix, Ariz.; grand-
children: Christopher Martin, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Matthew (Amanda) Richardson,
Wauwatosa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his
parents and wife, Arline, Ed was preceded in death by a son: James; and three
brothers: Hank, Godfrey and Peter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First German Evangelical
Lutheran Church, 1033 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc. The Rev. David Rosenow will
officiate with burial of his cremated remains at Evergreen Cemetery. Military
graveside rites will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post #659.
Relatives and friends may call after 9 a.m. at First German Evangelical Lutheran
Church to the time of service at 11 a.m. Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home
of Manitowoc is assisting the Aschenbrenner family.
