Topeka State Journal Wednesday June 29, 1977, pg. 38:
John Dewey Shultz,
78, Topeka, died Tuesday in a Topeka hospital. He had cancer. He was born Nov. 18, 1898 in Lebo. He moved to Topeka in 1922.
He served with the 42nd Rainbow Division of the Army in World War 1 and was in five major campaigns in France. He received the Purple Heart.

He was employed as a blacksmith by Santa Fe Railway Co. in Topeka for 42 years until he retired in June of 1965. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ, where he formerly was a deacon and elder.
He also was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, Jayhawk Barracks No. 1113 of World War I Veterans, the Oakland IOOF Lodge No. 640, the Santa Fe Old Timers Club and the Pratt-Dodge City and Chanute chapters of the 42nd Rainbow Division Club.

He was married June 8, 1921 to Mildred F. Benton. She died Dec. 5, 1965. He was married Sept. 6, 1968 to Elizabeth La Crone. She survives.
Other survivors include 4 sons, Dale E. Shultz, Topeka, Don M. Shultz, Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Larry Shultz, Newbury Park, Calif., and Ronald D. Shultz, Windom, Tex.; a brother, Dr. Roy E. Shultz, Oklahoma City, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Wilson, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Military graveside services will be conducted by Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion at Mount Hope Cemetery/
