and identified with the mecantile institution for 59 years, died suddently at
the home, 627 North Water street, early today.
Mr. Alter was taken ill a week ago but his condition was not considered serious.
He was stricken with a heart attack Sunday evening and died 12 hours later.
Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home,
under Masonic auspices. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
The deceased was born in this city in 1863, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Alter.
His father operated one of the early day inns in Manitowoc, at the corner of
Eight and Commercial streets. Early in life Mr. Alter developed a desire to enter
business. At the age of 13 he left grade school to take a position in the Schuette
store operated by his uncle, John Schuette.
After doing clerical work for a number of years Mr. Alter was assigned to the dry
goods department of the store. Later he assumed charge of the piece goods, and the
ready-to-wear in addition to his other duties.
When the Schuette Bros. Company was incorporated in 1901 Mr. Alter was one of the
incorporators. In the election of officers he was chosen treasurer, a positon he
has since held.
In the nearly 60-year span that the deceased was identified with the Schuette Bros.
Company, he saw the store grow from a small frame structure on South Eighth street
to one of the largest department stores in northeastern Wisconsin. His duties as a
store executive precluded his participation in Manitowoc's public life although he
was often identified with civic projects calling for supprot and encouragement of
business interest of the city.
Widow Survives
Fraternally Mr. Alter was a member of the Masonic order, the Knights of Pythias and
the Elks lodge. He was also one of the organizers and first officers of the Hey-Day
club, a social organization formed here in 1888, which maintained club rooms on the
third floor of the old Savings bank building.
Mr. Alter was married Dec. 30, 1890 to Miss Hattie Guttmann of this city.
Survivors are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Dunton, Grand Rapids, Mich.; two
sons, Fred and Clarence, both of this city; a brother, Oscar Alter, city.
The body may be viewed at the Pfeffer funeral home from Tuesday noon until the hour
of the services Wednesday afternoon.
