CLARENCE ALTER

Clarence Alter, 78, of 906 N. 12th St., Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon
at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with Masonic rites, at
Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery,
Manitowoc.
Mr. Alter was born June 25, 1894, at Manitowoc, son of the late Gustav and
Hattie Guttman Alter. After his graduation from high school, he attended
Highland Park College, Des Moines, Iowa. From 1914 to 1917, he located at
Plymouth, Mich., where he designed and manufactured the Alter motor car. He
enlisted in the service May 24, 1917. He served in France as a sergeant in the
Motor Transport Corps Unit No. 312. After his dscharge July 16, 1919, he owned
the Ford Agency at Milton Junction, Wis., for 12 years. In 1933, he became
associated with the Manitowoc Seed Co. and was the vice president until its
liquidation in 1960. He was on the board of directors of Schuette Bros. Co.,
a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion Drews Bleser Post No. 88. He
married Irma Meyer June 23, 1926, at Manitowoc.
His wife survives with two daughters, a sister, Mrs. H.C. (Margaret) Dunton, of
Grand Rapids, Mich., and six grandchildren. A brother Fred L., preceded him in

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:30 to 9 o'clock this Friday evening
and Saturday until the time of service. The casket will remain closed. Memorials
in his memory may be made to Holy Family or Memorial hospitals, Manitowoc.
