A Heart Rending Calamity.-

We were never called upon to record such a sad and melancholy accident as the
death, by drowning, of Mr. James Allen, of Manitowoc Rapids-one of the most
estimable and respected citizens of our county. He was in the village on the
Fourth, enjoying the society of his friends, and started for home about 5
o'clock, P.M. Not arriving to his family in season, fears were entertained, and
search was made next day. His hat was found in the river near the Rapids, which
fact confirmed the worst fears of his friends. Search was continued until
Thursday morning, when his cold and lifeless body was found beneath the waters.
It is supposed that in crossing the bridge, at the Rapids, he missed his footing
and
fell in the angry waters, never to rise again.

He was a very intelligent man, and possessed the confidence and esteem of all
his neighbors-being, at the time of his death, Chairman of the Board of
Supervisors.

A wife and seven children are left to mourn his sudden and unexpected death. May
a kind Providence comfort and protect them.
