Born as Carl Johann Friedrich Krüger in Friedland, Mecklenburg-Strelitz 20 Oct 1845 to parents Carl Krüger and Caroline Freund. He immigrated aboard Ship Vandalia arriving Oct 25, 1871 in NYC. He settled in Detroit and worked as a carpenter and eventually a stone mason.

He married Wilhelmine Kuhlow 22 Dec 1877 at Historic Trinity Lutheran Church. They had children: Amanda (Reinstein, Kaltz), Frederick, Clara, Charles and Minnie (Knief). They lived at 279 Maple Street which was then right at the end of Elmwood Cemetery.
