William Bristow was the son of George Bristow and Mary Anne Sykes of England. George Bristow was baptized July 28, 1805 at Blacktoft, Yorkshire County, England. He left England with his wife and sailed to America in the 1820s. They had several children: John W. Bristow, William Bristow, George Bristow, Harriet Bristow, Mary Ann Bristow and Georgianna Bristow. Their son, William who was born in Portland, Maine, came to California in 1851 along with as well as his brother John Bristow and his wife Ruth (Libby) Bristow. He became a butcher and raised his livestock at his home in Cherokee, Nevada County. He would deliver meats by wagon up the road into North San Juan and other towns. He fell from his wagon and his injury left him with a terrible brain injury and the family had him taken to Stockton to the State Hospital. When he died his body was brought to North San Juan for burial. William and Mary's children were:
