James was the son of Stephen Mack Winton and Candace E. (Powell) Winton.

James married Martha Cassandra McGraw on June 7, 1868 in Washington County, Arkansas.

James and Martha had five children: James Charles, Susan Matilda, Minola J., Eldora Mae and Minnie. I found James and Martha listed in a 1910 McIntosh County census that showed 2 grandchildren living with them. Their names were Jessie and James.

James was a brother of my GGrandfather, Zollie Coffer Winton.
