Bruce Monroe Hiatt returned home to his Heavenly Father Saturday June 27, 2009, surrounded physically and emotionally by those who loved him.

Bruce was born May 15, 1926 in Aberdeen, Idaho to Joel Walter Hiatt and Clara Matilda Keele Hiatt. He was their ninth child out of fourteen and the third son. Bruce grew up like all young men of his time. He helped his dad on the family farm, he loved to ride the horse and hunt and fish and played with his brothers and sisters. In 1934 he moved to Vale Oregon with his family. Arriving by train on February 14th. He helped his family take the land from sagebrush into a new farm. Bruce attended Vale High School. He started farming his own farm in 1946 and married BettyLou Fredricks July third of that year. They had 2 children Carolyn and Clayton before divorcing in 1954.

He was drafted into the Army in December of 1954 where he served as a medical corpsman in the 34th Ambulance train. This gave him a chance to see much of Europe before being discharged December 29, 1956. He returned to Vale for a short time and met Mona Lee Hansen before going to Washington State to work on a Dam Site on the Columbia River. He returned to Vale in April of 1958. He and Mona Lee were married April 26th of that year. They farmed and raised 5 children there, Joel, Leslie, Rosalie, Virginia and Kevin.

Bruce was active in the Vale LDS church serving in many different callings. He was also a 4-H leader, a scout leader and was a member of the Malheur County Mounted Sherrif's posse for many years. He and Mona Lee served an 18 month mission in Nauvoo, IL where they were guides at many sites in 1995 thru 1996 which was one of the highlights of their lives. They returned to Vale to live until Mona Lee passed away in 2000.

Bruce is survived by his children Carolyn and Ray Hendershot, Clayton and Sue Hiatt, Joel and Linda Hiatt, Leslie Hiatt, Rosalie and Mark Marvin, Virginia and Glenn Despain, and Kevin and Kamaile Hiatt,22 grandchildern and many great-grandchildren/ He is also survived by 2 brothers, Neil and Sid and 3 sisters, Alice Blackburn, Mae Honsvick and Avis Taylor.

Bruce loved to laugh and have fun. He worked hard to support his family, and loved to see them succeed in sports, education, and life. He will always be remembered in our hearts as wonderful example of how to live our lives.

A viewing will be held at the Vale Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Monday, July 6, 2009 from 9 - 10 am with funeral services scheduled for 10:00 am. Interment will follow at the Valley View Cemetery in Vale.
