William D.K. Crooks Jr., of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Marblehead, died peacefully April 19, 2006.

Born in Lynn and raised in Marblehead, "Crooksy" graduated from Marblehead High School in 1952. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in classics from Brown University in Providence, R.I.. and a Juris Doctor degree as well as a Master of Laws degree from Suffolk University. Mr. Crooks also earned a Master of Taxation degree from Portia University, now known as the New England School of Law.

He began his legal career with the Boston and Maine Railroad and was a member of one of the first private practices in Marblehead, beginning in the late 1960s, where he was known for many years for his legal wit and sense of humor. He continued to be a supporter of his alma mater, Brown, over the years, interviewing many North Shore would-be students.

Mr. Crooks was a longtime member of the Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead where his entire family learned to play golf and spent many happy occasions. Mr. Crooks retired to Orlando in 1989 where he had worked for several years for the state of Florida in its Department of Unemployment Compensation.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pennie, as well as three children, Lisa Marin (Darin) of Anchorage, Alaska, Holly Cassidy (Peter) of West Newbury, and Bill III (Teresa) of Lake Mary, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Regan and Molly of Anchorage, Alaska, Madeleine, Marielle and Cameron of West Newbury, and Will IV and Brittany of Lake Mary, Fla.; a sister, Peggy Burke (Paul) of Marblehead; a niece, Victoria Burke of Beverly Farms; a nephew, Paul Burke of Swampscott; one uncle, Earle Devlin (Jeanne) of Portland, Conn.; and his godfather, Donald Joyce of Swampscott.

Final arrangements were private.

Mr. Crooks requested that memorial donations be made to Girls and Boys Town at www.girlsandboystown.org or the Russell Home in Orlando at www.russellhome.org, a charity for which Mr. Crooks had occasion to play in many golf tournaments over the years.
