The gravestone is inscribed "T John Holland"

He was originally known as Tom Howard, but he and his brother William changed their names in 1860 to disguise their identities from bounty hunters when they fled slavery on the Underground Railway

T John swam across the Niagara River to reach safety in Canada, and eventually came to Hamilton where there had been a large and supportive community of blacks for several decades

He was the son of William Augustus 'Gustus' Holland and Leatha Howard of Sandy Springs, Maryland, USA

T John Holland married Henrietta Shortt on December 28, 1875, at Hamilton

Children of T John and Henrietta were:
* William Henson Holland
* Abigail Holland {m.Richard Hammond}
* Florence Leatha Holland {m.Ernest Johnson}
* John Christie Holland {m.Josephine Johnson}
* Flora Holland (b.1883)
* Emma Caroline Holland (1884-1885)
* Arthur Ward Holland
* Garnet Greenberry Holland
* Rosetta Beatrice Holland
* Kathleen Albretta Holland
* Thomas Blight Holland (1894-1895)
* Grace Phyllis Holland
* Frances Mary Holland (b.1898)

In 1913, when Henrietta passed away, the Holland family resided at 253 Catherine Street North, in downtown Hamilton. When T John died in 1928, he appears to have been living with his daughter Abigail Hammond, at 65 Gore Street, also downtown

There are numerous descendants of T John Holland/Howard and Henrietta Holland today, not only in Hamilton, but throughout Canada and the United States. They gather every two years, alternating between Ontario and Maryland, to honour and celebrate their proud African-North-American heritage
