Vatin enlisted in the United States Army on 17 April 1917 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia with service number 1023410. He was assigned to Company E, 24th Infantry Regiment and dispatched to Camp Furlong, Columbus, New Mexico to be a part of the "Punitive Expedition". While there, he fell under the command of General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing and aided in securing both sides of the United States / Mexican Border from the bandits of Poncho Villa. Vatin was promoted to Private First Class on 6 August 1918. He received an Honorable Discharge on 21 January 1919.
