Thomas was the son of Dr. Thomas and Elizabeth (Ferris) Cock. His father was one of the founding managers for Haverford College from 1830-1850. Haverford College, which open in 1833 in a suburb of Philadelphia, was founded by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Thomas was the first graduate of the college in 1836. He studied medicine at Columbia College, N.Y. and University of PA, getting his M.D. in 1838. He was consulting physician at New York Hospital, Bellevue Woman's Hospital, Woman's Infirmary, etc.
His first wife was Ann Augusta Wood who died in 1863. They had a daughter Augusta, born in 1844 who wed Josiah Chapin in 14 April 1869. Their other daughter Jane, born in 1850, died young.
His second wife was Mrs. Louise de Forest.
