Sylvan L. Kauffman, forty, Bird-in-Hand Rl, was killed early Thursday afternoon when he was crushed between a tractor sprayer combine and a building.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr.
W.M.Show, Bird-in-Hand R1 ,who reported he suffered a crushed chest,broken neck and possible internal injuries.
H. S. Slack,Bird-in-Hand, deputy coroner for
Leacock Twp.,issued a verdict of accidental death.
State police said the accident occurred at 12:45 p.m. on the A. L. Kauffman & Sons fruit farm, just off Rt. 340 at Bird-in-Hand, where Sylvan, one of the sons, was in charge of work in the orchard.
Police said Kauffman started the tractor,
to which was attached a large tank sprayer, but failed to realize it was in gear.
The tractor began moving and Kauffman was caught between a nearby building and the tank,and thrown under the wheels. The tractor continued across the fields for about 240 feet before stopping against another building.
Kauffman was a son of Amos L. and Susan
F.Lapp Kauffman, Bird-in-Hand R1, and was a member of the Weavertown A.M. Church.
In addition to his parents and his wife,
the former Elsie Glick,surviving are these children: David G., Kenneth R., Jay M., Susie Ann, Twilla Joy, Mary Jane and Nancy Faye,all at home;and these brothers and sisters: Sadie, wife of Christian B. Beiler, Ronks Rl; Christian B. and John E. Kauffman, both of Bird-in-Hand Rl;Elam L. Kauffman and Mary L., wife of Aaron Z. King, both of Ronks Rl; and Melvin L.Kauffman, Roaring Branch, Pa.
