Maria Johanneksentytär Metsälä (neé Takala) was born on 19th of May 1856 as the eldest child of Jussi and Anna Takala. She had six younger siblings.
Jussi Takala was very keen to educate his children and therefore even the daughters went to school at the young age. Even though Maria didn't have a chance to be educated probably, she learnt to read and write and she was said to be a really determined and ready-worded yet clever woman.
Maria married Matti Metsälä on 30th of September 1876 and they had five children, two of which died young. Three daughters lived to see adulthood: Emilia, Eeva Lyydia and Anna Elin.
Anna Elin died just a year after the birth of her son and therefore Maria and Matti raised their grandson Eino August Tuomisalo as child of their own.
