Her family emigrated to Canada some time before 1851, when she married John Cumpson. The couple lived in Niagara, in what was then known as Upper Canada or Canada West, and is now known as the southern part of the province of Ontario, Canada.
They had five children there.
They came to the U.S. and settled in Buffalo, New York in about 1861. John worked as a blacksmith there. The family added four more children.
The children of Rosanna and John include Rosanna (Annie), coffee merchant Thomas Cumpson, Mary E. Cumpson, Matilda (Tilly) Cumpson, Louisa Cumpson, Alice Cumpson Escher, silent film actor John R. Cumpson, Bella Cumpson, and James Cumpson.
