Local Faith Healer Dies Near Urbana
Henry A Hoffman, 66, widely known spiritualist and faith healer, died Friday at his home near Rosewood, after two months illness. Death was caused by a heart attack.
Hoffman was known as Rev Hoffman and was licensed by The Cloverdale Spiritualist Church of Columbus, as a psychologist, lecturer and healer.
For several years his country home had been a mecca for the sick and ailing who came from all over Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and other states seeking relief at his hands.
Several times Hoffman had brushes with the law and in January, 1934, was found guilty in the Common Pleas Court at Eaton on a charge of practicing medicine illegally.
His practice was not to charge a fee for his services but patients were informed they could make donations to "Christ's Helping Hand Society" of which he was one of the incorporators under Ohio laws. Receptacles for receiving such donations were conveniently placed around his home.
Hoffman was born in Hanover, Germany, and came to the United States in his youth. He spent much of his young manhood in and around Urbana and has resided near here for the last 13 years after returning from Indiana where he made his home for a while.
Surviving are his widow, Margaret, a son, Roy Hoffman, Urbana, a daughter, Mrs Nellie Brake, Urbana, and a brother, Frank Hoffman, Urbana. Another brother, Herman Hoffman, has not been heard from since he served in the Spanish American War.
Funeral services will be held from the late home at 4:00 pm Monday in charge of Rev Harry W Barr, pastor of the Urbana Presbyterian Church. Interment will be made in Grand View Cemetery.
The body will be taken to the home from the Humphreys & Son Co Funeral home Sunday.
