John G. Horwat, age 89, of Merrittstown, PA., passed away Monday, March 1, 2004, at his residence.

He was born June 26, 1914, in Thompson 2, PA., a son of the late John Horwat and Barbara Suhan Horwat. John was married to Rose Constable Horwat and father to Barbara, Helen (Chome), Doug and grandfather to Douglas John Horwat.

John was retired from the coal industry where he had worked from 1925 until 1953.

He was a United States Army Veteran who served in World War II for only six months. His former bosses Louis and Sam Johnson owners of Republic Coal, Republic, PA, petitioned the Army to bring John back home. John was needed more at home than for the war cause. John was stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia as an MP.

Later John was employed as a Landscaper for Isler's Nursery in Butler, PA. He got the nick name "Bullet" because he moved so quickly and got things done.

My dad was famous for his singing and his quick wit.
