The crew of B-24H #41-28673, the number 355 plane, was brought down due to flak on its mission to a target at Pforzheim 1 April 1944 near the area of Arras FRANCE and in the vicinity of the German border. Col James M Thompson, the Command Pilot, was killed in the crash. Three airmen were able to evade capture, however, the others were taken as POWs. The 389th Bomb Group lost three planes that day due to flak. This loss is documented in MACR #3596. The aircraft model was B-24H-15-DT, Letter J. The crew members were~

Deceased Name: John A. Dutka Sr.

MERIDEN - John A. Dutka, Sr., 88, of Windsor Ave., Meriden, beloved husband of Rose M. Galluzzo Dutka, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the Wadswor th Glen Health Care Center in Middletown.
Born in Griswold, Feb. 18, 1920, he was a son of the late Michael and Pauline Peuwa Dutka, he had been a Meriden resident for 58 years. John served with the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II attached to the 8th Air Force, 389th Bomb Group, and 554th Bomb Squadron as a flight engineer and was shot down over German occupied France. He was listed as Missing in Action for eight months until the French underground was able to get him to Spain and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He had been employed as the supervisor of housekeeping at the Monsignor Bojnowski Manor in New Britain for many years until his retirement, was a member of the American Legion, the S-X Sportsman Association and was an avid fisherman.
Besides his wife, Rose, he is survived by his two daughters, Pam Sietz of Meriden and Kristen Maxwell and her husband, Chris of Farmington; his son, John A. Dutka Jr. of Meriden; his two grandchildren, Ally Sietz and Andrew Maxwell; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Catherine Benson and Anne Justice; and his two brothers, Joseph and Walter Dutka.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial, Saturday, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 109 Goodwill Ave., Meriden. Interment with military honors will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the Parkinson's Disease Association, 27 Allendale Drive, North Haven, CT 06473.
