The stray that adopted our family...

This loving pet came into our home in August 2008. He was a feral cat that was spotted around the neighborhood, looking frail and ill - he appeared to be starving.

He was extremely timid and distrusting. We could only feed him by placing food outside and going back indoors until one fateful night when he was hit by a car. He dragged himself into our open garage and cried for help.

When we brought him to the vet x-rays revealed a crushed pelvis and broken back. I asked that he be put down and the vet came in a few minutes later and said "this is unorthodox and even unprofessional, but would you consider letting him live? I feel he will be alright." Remembering similar words I spoke as a child and that someone trusted my feelings, I readily agreed. He was given the name "Trooper" because a trooper is what he was. He had used up 8 of his 9 lives in one incident, but clung on and recovered.

In 2010 we lost our dog Juice and a few days later we lost our son Kevin. Trooper patiently hung around me as I inconsolably grieved. One day I realized he followed me like Juice had done, sleeping with me and learning to trust more and more each day.

By the end of his life we were best buddies. People that visited were amazed that he would kiss and sit when requested. His spot to sleep was always at my side.

I miss you Troop-Troop so much.
