Nadine Earls, a retired CNA, passed away on July 10, 2012. She was born Dorothy Nadine Baldwin in Blanco, Oklahoma, in 1926. Her parents were Edward Lee Baldwin and Bessie McCutchan. Her father was a lawman and later on a farmer and blacksmith. Her mother was raised in Oklahoma - mostly the McAlester area. Her mother's family came from the Irish-American community of McCutchanville, Indiana, and many of the men were brickmasons.
Nadine was raised on a farm, and went to school in a one-room school house. Many of her neighbors growing up were farming families. Many of her good friends growing up were Native American and she loved the culture and art for the rest of her life. When she was growing up, her father and Native American families would farm, and after the farm season was over with every year, they would get together, cook food and have a big feast together. She was raised to have respect for people, and not judge or make your mind up about anyone because of race, religion, or anything else like that. She taught her children and grandchildren the same.
When she was 16-years-old, she left highschool and went to work as a nurse aid to send money to her parents after their farm burnt down.
In 1947, she married Bert Lewis Earls from the neighboring town of Haileyville.
In 1954, she moved with her husband and four children to Bucklin, Kansas. Her husband found a job there as a teacher in the school and was later made principal.
Nadine had four children: a son, daughter, and two twin girls. She was always a go-getter; she cooked, made her children's clothes, kept the house, and worked. She had ten grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
For 40+ years she worked as a CNA (Certified Nurse Aid) in Bucklin. She first worked in the hospital in Bucklin, until it was closed, after that, she worked the rest of her career at The Hilltop House nursing home. She loved her job and helping people. Often times she would even go in to help without pay on her days off.
Nadine loved growing flower and vegetable gardens and you'd see her outside everyday in the spring and summer. She was a big animal lover and fed, nursed and took care of stray and feral cats. Often times taking them in for treatment at the vets, when finding them sick or wounded.
From 2000-2008, Chloe The Ferret was her very best friend.
She suffered from various conditions for many years: including Sjogren's, Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Hypothyroidism, and Severe Osteoporosis.
In 2009, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, although they believe she'd had it for several years, but stayed in mild-moderate stages for quite awhile.
Nadine passed away at Presbyterian Manor of The Plains, from Congestive Heart Failure - that was likely brought on by MRSA Pneumonia stressing her heart - at 85-years-old.
