JEAN CAROLYN AURAND

Passed away peacefully at her residence in Mission Hills, CA., after a lengthy illness. Jean was born July 21, 1929 in Reading, PA., to Theodore Roosevelt Aurand and Hilda Irene Oliver.

Her family moved from Pennsylvania in 1935 to Los Angeles County, CA. In fall of 1946 Jean worked for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co in Los Angeles City. Jean's loving mother Hilda died the following year.

Jean became a member of the Catholic Church on October 25, 1947 and in July 9148 she entered the convent of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Los Angeles, and then transferred to Marymount Novitiate, Tarrytown, New York in September of 1948. She took her first Vows and was sent to teach in the Bronx, New York.

Jean was assigned and traveled to Bogota, Columbia for the next nine years where she taught Spanish. In 1962 she returned to Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York. In 1964 she was reassigned to Barcelona, Spain. Jean returned to California in 1965 and taught for two years at Sacred Heart of Mary, Montebello, and at Marymount Jr. College in Palos Verdes. Jean left the convent in June 1970.

In September 1970 she started teaching at St. Bernard High School, Playa del Rey, and continued teaching in the early 1980s at Bellarmine Jefferson High School in Burbank, CA. She returned to St. Bernard High School in 1983 and worked as a secretary at Queen of Angels Seminary, Mission Hills, CA., and retired in 1995.

After retirement, Jean really enjoyed working on the family genealogy projects with her nephew Bill Aurand. They spent many hours doing research and were able to visit their relatives in Tamaqua, PA.

Jean loved animals, especially her dogs, Honey, KoKo and Classy. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and was an avid pianist. Jean will most be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her warm and caring personality, and her devotion to the teachings of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by her brothers, Theodore R. Aurand of Gilbertown, Alabama, and William F. Aurand of Westlake Village, California. Her brother John Oliver Aurand of Carson City, Nevada, passed away only a few days prior to Jean's death. She will be profoundly missed by numerous members of her family and friends.

Services will be held Friday, July 6, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery and Mausoleum, 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), which was dear to Jean's heart or to the Providence Trinity Care Hospice of Van Nuys, CA. www.trinitycarehospice.org.
