Sister Verna Schmitt, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 97, died July 25, 2003, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse.

Sister Verna was born to Clemens and Anna Johanna (Kuennen) Schmitt on Jan. 3, 1906, on a farm near St. Lucas, Iowa. She entered St. Rose Convent on Aug. 15, 1928, and professed vows in 1932. Ministering as a homemaker, she ministered to her sisters in convent homes in Iowa and Wisconsin for 53 years, including 13 years at St. James, La Crosse and 11 years as housekeeper at Viterbo College. She retired to St. Rose Convent in 1984 and to the Villa in 1999.

Sister Verna is survived by her Franciscan Community and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Anthony, Frank, Victor, Herman, Joseph and Clemens; and four sisters, Catie, Sister Pascaline, FSPA, Sister Colletine, FSPA, and Julia.

Friends may call after 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, when the body will be met at St. Rose Convent. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 28, in Mary of the Angels Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Mary of the Angels Chapel, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse.

Memorials may be sent to Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, 912 Market St., La Crosse, WI 54601-8800. Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
