Son of William and Mary (Bennett) Bate who was born in Tywardreth, Cornwall, England. His father was a blacksmith and a boilermaker. William acquired a general knowledge of the business under his father's training. On July 13, 1847 he left England for New York. After arriving in the United States, he was employed in New Jersey, Conneticut and Maryland. In 1856 he came to Norristown, Pa. and supervised the Norris Iron Works. In 1866, he came to Conshohocken and with John Wood and His son Richard established the William T. Bate and company. After Wood retired the firm was re-organized as William T Bate and Son. Bate secured patents in the boiler making industry and was known in scientific journals throughout the United States and the world. He was associated Professor Thaddeus Lowe, the Civil War ballonist in manfacturing the first water gas boiler. On January 18, 1839 he married Elizabeth George of Cornwall, England.
