from Wayne Independent:
August Smith, aged 76, a very highly respected citizen of White Mills, died at his home Sunday of complications following an illness of several months. He was a native of Germany and came with his parents to NY when a boy, a short time later moving to White Mills where he learned the glass-blowing trade at the Dorflinger Plant. Later he gave up the vocation and took up farming at the same place and which he followed as long as he was able to work. He was, on various occasions, honored by election offices in the village. He is survived by his wife who was Mary Tuman, widow of Dr, Doetsch of White Mills; three sons: John of White Mills, August and Joseph of Corning NY; a step daughter Mrs. Fred Bauer, White Mills; a stepson Jacob Doetsch, Honesdale; one sister Mrs. Anthony Rickert, Indian Orchard. The funeral will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Church Wed. Interment in the parish cemetery Honesdale.

(Married in 1879, his first wife Elizabeth Rimlinger died in 1888.)
