Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland, he was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania medical school. He enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as an Assistant Surgeon of the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in that capacity until April 28, 1863, when he was transferred to the 48th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and promoted to Chief Surgeon. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the final Union Army assaults on Confederate positions at Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads "Removed severely wounded officers and soldiers from the field while under a heavy fire from the enemy, exposing himself beyond the call of duty, thus furnishing an example of most distinguished gallantry'. Brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865, he saw the war through to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. His Medal was awarded to him on July 21, 1897. His grave lain unmarked from his death in 1922 until 2006.
