George Bartlett Budge had his right arm broken when he was a child. The doctor came out of a saloon to set his arm and did it poorly. Thus it was paralyzed for the rest of his life. He had a strong bias against alcohol in any form from then on. He hewed ship timbers in Maine, which must have been difficult with only one working arm. He also taught school, was the librarian, and established a traveling library.
