Julian, a bachelor, was reared and educated in Norfolk, Nebraska, and about 1924 began a 24-year career with the U. S. Army, attaining the rank of master sergeant. During his lengthy and active military service, he traveled throughout the world, and at the outbreak of World War II he was assigned the job of training recruits for the war effort. Some time earlier, he had nearly lost one of his arms in an accident; the injury was so serious, in fact, that the limb had nearly been severed at the shoulder. (Near his old wound, he sported a brightly-colored tattoo that said "Opened By Mistake"). As a consequence of the injury, Julian's use of his arm was limited, and this fact contributed to his nearly fatal fall from a troop transport ship during training exercises in 1944. In this accident, Julian lost his grip on a rope ladder attached to the side of the transport vessel, and he plunged some distance to a boat below, striking his head and neck. He remained paralyzed for months, and spent nearly a year in a military hospital. After receiving a permanent disability rating from the Army, Julian retired to Portland, Oregon, where he lived with his mother and sister. During the last few years of his life, he operated a pinball-machine repair business. He never married, and died at 47.
