SPRINGFIELD- Sam T. Sgro of Springfield, died on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Mary Lou's Country Home in Buffalo, IL.
Sam was born June 10, 1929 in Springfield, the son of John Sgro and Ceil Hogan Sgro. He married Mary Kathryn "Midge" Jannesse on May 7, 1949; she preceded him in death on February 4, 2012.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Bette) Park.
Sam attended SS Peter and Paul Grade School and Cathedral Boys High School. He was a champion boxer in The Golden Gloves and was in the National Guard from 1947-1948.
Sam was in sales for most of his life and never knew a stranger. He was a multi-million dollar seller with Prudential Insurance Company for many years, retiring in 1985 with heart problems. He then began rehab at St. John's Hospital, which he continued for 23 and ½ years. His picture was on a banner displayed around the hospital for being one of the longest rehab patients. He was a big Yankee and Joe Torre fan.
Sam is survived by his children, Mike (Margie) Sgro and Pati Sgro both of Springfield, Diane (Jim Davis) Seiz-Davis of Athens, Mary (Jay) Shattuck, Pam Reynolds, and John Sgro, all of Springfield; eighteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister, Fran (John) Matheis of Springfield; sisters-in-law, Helen (Tom; deceased) Halford and Rita (Don) Seiders, both of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012 at St. Joseph's Church, 1345 North 6th St., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. Thomas Holinga, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
