DEATH: newspaper obituray- Newell, South Dakota:
Services for Everet Munroe, 79, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Sturgis, SD with Pastor Joe Whetzel officiating. Burial will be in Bear Butte Cemetery, Sturgis, with arrangements by F.O. Jolley Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the Belle Fourche Long Term Health Care Center. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Munroe, a long time Newell resident, died Saturday in Belle Fourche. He was born on Nov. 18, 1902, at Neleigh, Nebraska, to Charles and Mary Munroe. He moved with his family to Lead in 1903 by stagecoach. The family later moved to a homestead near Maurine in 1909.
He attended school at Fox Ridge. As a young man, he worked for the Diamond A Cattle company.
On March 2, 1922, he married Alice Fairbanks at Cedar Canyon. He worked for various ranches until 1934. In 1940, he moved to a ranch near Stoneville, and in 1955, the couple moved to Newell, where they purchased the Newell Pool Hall.
He served as Butte County Deputy Sheriff for many years and was the organizer of the Newell Traditional Labor Day Rodeo starting in 1956. He entered the nursing home in Belle Fourche in May 1979, and resided there until his death.
He was a member of the Faith Masonic Lodge #168 for 31 years and a member of the Newell Order of the Eastern Star #121 for many years.
Survivors include on daughter, Mrs Roger (Barbara) Jensen, of Sturgis; two sons, Albert of Stoneville and Walter of Sturgis; two brothers, Frank of Winslow, Arizona, and Gene of Newell, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1963, his son, Judd in 1975 and a brother George.
