▪︎ Born: c 1416 - Died Abt. 1455

2. Alice (source: visitation of Sussex)
2. Anne (source: visitation of Sussex)
2. Sanchia (source: visitation of Sussex)
2. Margeret (source: visitation of Sussex)
2. Ralph Shirley Esq.

▪︎ Ralph was a son and heir to Sir Ralph Shirley and Joan Basset, grandson of Sir Hugh Shirley and Beatrice Brewes, Thomas Basset and Margery Meringe.

Husband of Margaret Staunton, daughter of John Staunton of Staunton-Harrold in Breedon, Leicestershire and John, daughter of Sir Ralph de Meynell. They married on the 1st of September 1423 by papal dispensation dated 02 Apr 1423, and had one son, John.

Secondly, husband of Elizabeth Blount, daughter of Sir John Blount, They had one son and five daughters; Ralph, Elizabeth, Alice, Sanche, Anne and Margaret.

Thirdly, husband of Lucy Ashton, the daughter of Sir John Ashton and widow of Sir John Byron, slain at the Battle of St Albans in 1455. They married after 1455, and had no issue.

Note: Ralph Shirley, Constable of Melbourne Castle and the Castle of the Peak, both in Derbys. [Burke's Peerage] held the manor of Barrow upon Soar as heir of Sir Ralph Shirley of Ettington and Brailsford

Sir Ralph Shirley was dubbed knight for his valour on the battlefield of Stoke in 1487 by the first Tudor King, Henry VII. After the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and the defeat of Richard III, the Battle of Stoke consolidated Henry's position by defeating the Yorkist pretender, Lambert Simnel. Henry married Elizabeth of York thereby uniting the houses of Lancaster and York and bringing to an end the War of the Roses. The white and red roses were united to give us the symbolic Tudor rose we are familiar with today. Sir Ralph, married the heiress of the ancient family of Staunton of Staunton Harold,East Leak, and other Leicester and the Leicestershire estates became the principle residence of the elder line of the Shirley family. It is also from this marriage that the Earl Ferrers of today came.

The marriage to Margaret Staunton occurred 2.4.1423, a date early enough to fit the lifespan of Thomas Shirley of Swepston.
The parallel nature of the document outlining the interest in Barrow upon Soar would be consistent with this descent
Presumably the same Thomas Shirley leased Staunton Harold from agents of Ralph Shirley esq in 1458, two years after a document named Ralph and his second wife Elizabeth Blount. Therefore, following Ralph's second marriage, his son Thomas leased his mother's estate from his father.
E. However, Stemmata says Ralph and Margaret only had one son, John Shirley of Staunton (named in the above document)
