BEARDSTOWN - A. O'Neil Meyer, 78, of Beardstown, died Friday, July 6th, 2012, in his home.

He was born December 22, 1933, in Hammond, IN, the son of Wilbur and Margaret "Nell" O'Neil Meyer. He married Eleanor Ready in 1957 in Arlington, VA.

Surviving are his wife Eleanor "Ellie" Meyer of Beardstown; his children, Dr. Gregory Meyer of Phoenix, AZ, Shelly (deceased husband Todd) Harmeyer of Beardstown, and Lisa (husband Robb) Swanson of Marengo; six grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew Lesiecki, Christopher Yost, Amelia Harmeyer, and O'Neil and Savannah Swanson; and one brother Terrill "TJ" (wife Penny) Meyer of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Stephanie Lesiecki, and one brother Milton Meyer.

O'Neil graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1951 and later from Culver Stockton College in 1955. After a semester of graduate school at the University of Missouri in Columbia, he accepted a position with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. At that time, the Space Age was in its infancy, and the government conducted many experiments with rockets and rocket fuels. Mr. Meyer worked for Grand Central Rocket Company in Redlands, CA and later for Aerojet General in Azusa, CA. He returned to his hometown of Beardstown in 1964.

In Beardstown, Mr. Meyer developed a large base of customers who appreciated his skill at refinishing furniture. He was a perfectionist who was known for his meticulous attention to detail. He was a member of Beardstown Elks BPO Lodge #1007, Ducks Unlimited and Beardstown Lions Club where he was well known for managing the Lions Food Trailer and keeping track of the Lions history albums. He loved gardening and also teaching his children and grandchildren about gardening.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 14, 2012, at St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown. Dinner will be served at the Beardstown Elks Club immediately following. All who wish to come are welcome.

Memorials have been suggested to Houston Memorial Library, Beardstown Lion's Club, Cass/Schuyler Area Hospice, or St. Alexius Catholic Church.
