Funeral services for Vernon Fairbanks will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Spearfish, South Dakota with Rev. Peter Moe, Spearfish, South Dakota officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, under the direction of the Fidler Funeral Chapel.
Fairbanks, 71, died Monday night at the Lookout Memorial Hospital. A memorial has been established.
He was born July 30, 1910, at Maurine, the son of Walter and Emma (Barnett) Fairbanks. He was married to Alice Jane Talley, Nov 29, 1935, at Sturgis, and they ranched near Maurine until May 1957. They moved to Sturgis in 1957 and owned a children's shop there until 1962. In 1963, the moved to Rapid City where Fairbanks was a caretaker at the Bradksy Trailer Court and a custodian at the First Presbyterian Church. They retired in 1976 and moved to Spearfish. Mrs. Fairbanks died Dec 25, 1978.
He was married to Grace Smith, May 18, 1980, at Spearfish and they made their home here.
He was a member of the Faith Masonic Lodge No. 168 AF&AM, the Sturgis Senior Citizens and Spearfish Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Grace of Spearfish; one daughter, Arlene Dutton, Grand Rapids, Minnesota; two sons, Raymond, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Dennis, Missoula, Montana; one step-daughter, Karen Bridges of Spearfish; and one step-son, Darrell Smith, Tucson, Arizona; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Thingelstad, Spearfish and Gladys Cossairt, Rancho Cordova, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; two sisters, Dorothy and Alice; and three brothers, Dewey, Lawrence and Harry.
