Thomas served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII in the 446th BG, and was a POW in Germany after his B-24 bomber "Luck 'n Stuff" was shot down. After the war, he graduated from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and became a businessman.
