According to the grave marker placed by his grandson, Abel was born in 1808 and died in 1874. He is believed to have been the son of James Henderson Cook. Abel farmed in Surry County, North Carolina.

On 29 Nov 1831, he married Justine Simmons in Surry County. They had a son, Newell, around 1836. On the 1840 US Census, Abel has one male under six years old in his home, presumably this is Newell.

The children of Abel and Justine were:
:Issac, b @1832 (uncertain), d before 1874
:Newell, b @1836

Abel's second wife was Agnes Clayhill.

The children of Abel and Agnes were:
:Edward F, b @ 1839
:Martha, b 1842, married Henderson Cain
:James M, b @ 1844, died before 1874
:Isham, b @ 1845
:John M, b @ 1847
:Joseph Columbus, b 1850
:Gideon, b @ 1852
:John Matthew, b @ 1858
:Abel C, b @ 1864

==Research Notes ==
#Proof that Abel was the son of James Henderson Cook, would be found through documentation that he inherited a tract of land from his mother upon her death which had previously been owned by Jacob Jessup and which was adjacent to the "Knowland Plantation/Mill" (as per the will of James Cook).

#The only other "Abel Cook" found in pre-1800 North Carolina records are for the brother of James Henderson Cook's father, John Cook, strengthening the case for this Abel to be his descendant.
