Enrolled as a Private in the 59th Indiana Regiment for the Civil War February 1862, which was the first regiment to report to General Pope and the "Army of the Mississippi". He was promoted to Capt. of a colored troop 49th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers at Milliken's Bend, LA. Aprill 1863. He contracted billious fever, was sent home and could not return to duty and died as a result of his illness.
