John Harbaugh was born in Prussia, Germany, December 31, 1838 and died at his home in Union Corners February 27, 1918, aged 80 years, 1 month, and 2 days. (Note: Union Corners was a hamlet in Brady Twp., south of West Unity). When 14-years old he came with his parents to America in March 1852 and located in Florence township, Ohio.

He was united in marriage to Catherine Dick in 1865. To this union were born 5 children, two of whom died in infancy, leaving three who survive.

When Lincoln first called for troops, he was one of the first to volunteer. He enlisted in April 1861, in Co. G, 68th Reg, O. V. V. I. and was mustered out in the fall of 1865. The wife and mother preceded him in death December 28, 1914. He leaves to mourn his loss three children, three grandchildren, three brothers, two sisters and many friends to cherish his memory.

Funeral services were held at the home on Friday, March 1, 1918, conducted by Rev. Geo. W. Long. Internment was made in Riverside Cemetery. The floral offerings by the Spring Lake Grange. Mr. Frank Gump of Montpelier, the children and friends at Angola, Ind., were beautifully significant. The children tender their thanks to all friends who so kindly rendered assistance during their bereavement, to the Berlin singers for their comforting songs and to Rev. Long for his words of consolation.

John was the son of John Peter Harbaugh (1816 - 1889) and Catharina "Catherine" (Kohl) Harbaugh (1823 - 1880).Both parents were from Germany and died in Ohio.
