Two Dickenson miners killed at Open Fork
NORA, VA. - A roof fall at Clinchfields's Open Fork mine near Nora, Va., caused the deaths of two Dickenson County miners last Friday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p. m.
Killed in the accident were Jerry Wayne Smith, 34, of Nora, Va., and Arlin Lee Rose, 45, of Birchleaf, Virginia.
The men were working about four miles underground.
Reportedly, it took about five hours to recover the bodies.
Investigations are being conducted by officials from the Virginia Division of Mines and the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Mrs. Rose is survived by his wife, Jean Couch Rose; one daughter, Deneene Rose, of the home; his mother, Mrs. Maxie Long Rose, Wise, Va., two sisters, Mrs. Joyce Fields, Wise, Va., and Mrs. Peggy Godby, Aurora, Ill.; one brother, Hennon Rose, St. Paul, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a. m., Tuesday at the Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with REV. Carter Boyd officiating. Burial was in the Long Cemetery, Nora, Va., with Haysi Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers were Wayne Long, C. A. Long, Dennie Long, Carl Fields, Otis Baker, Ray Perrigan, Luther Rose, Jessie Kiser, Jin Mess and Clyde Boyd.
Honorary pallbearers were Fennon Rose, JR., Johnny Long, Clyde Long, Scott Long, Jeffery Long, Vaughn Long, Harry Rose and Jim Rose.

Lee Rose is on the Headstone, but his first name was Arlin. He went by Lee, his middle name.
